Solutions

Our exhibition was awesome; there is no other word I would rather use for it. After seeing mine actually setup I wish I would’ve had the money to do a little bit more with it, but everyone else’s works were amazing.  Some of my favorite works were Patrick’s Environmental piece, Allie’s Newspaper, and Skye’s Starbucks performance.  What I found really interesting was that we as an audience had to push the button in order for something to change which puts the whole “Human footprint” in a new perspective.  Your actions affect everything around you and this project truly portrays that.  The newspaper was hilarious; the stories that were written made the actual paper look like a joke.  This school is spending money like crazy and when it seems like they’re going to spend it spontaneously it makes it seem absurd. Skye’s piece was just very well put together; the environment, the people, and the workers just brought this piece together very well.  People’s reactions to his performance were exactly what I thought they would be, is what happened.  I would really like to do something like this again.

Yes Men Are Revolting

I was really interested in watching this film especially after the first one.  The Yes Men are an amazing political activist group that takes matters into their own hands no matter the cost, even if it means getting sued by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  I liked that this film showed more of their personal lives and the toll their work takes on not only them but their families as well.  Not only being more personal the acts they performed in this film were far more extreme than the ones they did in the first film, like pretending to be a U.S. Chamber of Commerce representative and then being caught halfway through a press conference.  Of course the Chamber wasn’t to pleased and decided to take legal action, however after their “stunt” went public the chamber dropped their case and even had a change of heart.  It only takes a small group of men who are willing to do the most in order to get change, if we all had half the incentive they had we could get a lot more change in every aspect we want.  After watching the film I honestly wanted to find out what I could do to make a difference, to make an effort and see it succeed must be rewarding as well as living your normal life as a professor as well.

Paper 1
Manhattan Short Films

I had never attended anything like this and I really enjoyed these films.  The times ranged in between five and fifteen minutes and length didn’t matter in this situation.  Some of the shorter films struck me more than the longer ones.  What I appreciate from these films is the effort and drive the directors and producers have when making these films.  I can’t remember off of the top of my head the name of the film but it was the story of the director and having rebel forces drive his town out of their homes and have his best friend killed right next to him.  I will never forget this film and its impact it had on me.  Seeing things like this happen in real movies we can say well it can just be scripted or maybe they up it to make it appealing however this is not the case.  When the man who lost his best friend as a boy found his old bike, you could see the pain and hurt in his eyes, you felt his pain.  These films were all very well done and I cant wait for next years show.

Sound Art

This gallery was very interesting, especially since I volunteered to help set it up, and being able to see it from start to finish was an amazing process.  Not only that but prepping a wall, editing a video, but working on an installation makes you appreciate it more. When you walk in you’re greeted with a library of books that all refer to sound art, and a video of a performance from Clint Sleeper.  He’s using dirt to play instruments, which is an extreme way to play and treat these instruments.  As you keep moving along the sounds that you hear are completely different.  The aesthetic feel from each section was very different.  From instruments and amps to soft gentle “tings” coming from metal casted bowls.  The final piece in the gallery was by far my favorite.  It was a video being projection mapped onto scrim with I believe eight speakers to engulf you in an arrangement of astonishing sounds.  The video work is a recording of a salt marsh that is drying up and will no longer exist in a couple of years.  Seeing the interaction between people and the ecosystem and all organisms that live there is an interesting experience especially since it’s not going to be around for much longer.

Here are some images of my final installation, I was kinda upset that my flag couldn't be printed to actual size on cloth due to cost as well as printer issues. Once i found out that my flag would cost $140 to print i decided I would print it 3'x5' on normal paper. However it wasn't as easy as i thought and the printer distorted the images as well as the color.  The red in the flag came out orange and every other color came out really flat.  That being said I didn't mind the flag being little especially since the quality was so much better than the other prints.
